Save time, money, and keep your car running smoothly
Car maintenance doesn’t always mean a trip to the mechanic. While some repairs are best left to the pros, there are a few basic tasks you can easily do at home to keep your vehicle in good shape. Regular maintenance helps prevent bigger issues down the road—and it can boost your confidence as a car owner.
Here are 5 simple DIY car maintenance tasks you can do with minimal tools and a few spare minutes:
1. Check Your Engine Oil
Why: Engine oil keeps your car running smoothly by reducing friction and wear. Low or dirty oil can cause serious damage over time.
What to do:
- Park on a level surface and let the engine cool.
- Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert, and pull it out again.
- Check the oil level and color. It should be amber and within the "full" range.
- If the oil looks dark or dirty, or if it’s low, it may be time for an oil change or top-off.
2. Inspect Tire Pressure
Why: Properly inflated tires improve fuel efficiency, extend tire life, and keep you safer on the road.
What to do:
- Use a tire pressure gauge to check each tire, including the spare.
- Compare the reading to the recommended pressure found in your owner’s manual or inside the driver’s door.
- Add air if needed—most gas stations have free or low-cost air pumps.
- Check monthly, especially during seasonal temperature changes.
3. Top Off Windshield Washer Fluid
Why: A clean windshield is essential for visibility, especially in bad weather or when bugs and dirt build up.
What to do:
- Locate the washer fluid reservoir under the hood (look for a windshield icon on the cap).
- Fill with washer fluid until it reaches the "full" line.
- Use a solution rated for your climate—some are made to resist freezing.
4. Test Lights and Signals
Why: Burned-out bulbs are a safety risk and can earn you a ticket. Regular checks are quick and easy.
What to do:
- Turn on headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights.
- Walk around the car to make sure all are working.
- Ask someone to help test brake lights, or back up to a wall to see their reflection.
- Stop by Seiler Tire to have us help replace any non-working bulbs.
5. Check Fluid Levels (Coolant, Brake, Transmission)
Why: Fluids are the lifeblood of your car. Keeping them at proper levels helps everything run safely and efficiently.
What to do:
- Look for clearly labeled reservoirs under the hood.
- Check the levels while the engine is cool and parked on level ground.
- If any are low or look discolored, consult your owner’s manual or give us a call.
- Avoid overfilling, and never open a hot radiator cap!
Final Tip: Keep a Maintenance Log
Jot down the dates you check or top off fluids and air pressure. It’s a great way to stay on top of your car’s health between professional services.
